A young man who drove at 136 kph in a 50kph zone was fined €500 and banned from driving for one year at Longford District Court.
Antolii Demeshkevych (19) of Cooney's Bar and Hotel, Main Street, Ballymahon was initially charged with dangerous driving at Clonbalt Longford on May 5, 2024.
Solicitor John Quinn made an application to have the charge reduced from dangerous driving to careless driving.
Sgt Mahon told Judge Bernadette Owens that Mr Demeshkevych was detected at 10:30pm and there was no other traffic in the area.
Giving background to his client's offending Mr Quinn said the defendant “reacted wrong” to an emergency when a relation was in trouble. He was in a rush to get to their assistance. The solicitor said the defendant apologised for his over reaction.
Mr Quinn told the court his client is a part time worker in a hotel in Ballymahon and the owner had given him an exemplary reference. It was stated that Mr Demeshkevych has since sold the car and the young man has given an undertaking that it “will never reoccur”.
Noting the defendant's good reference, the fact he has no previous convictions, Judge Owens said it was “inexcusable” to go at 136 kph in a 50 kph zone, particularly as it was a residential area. The judge imposed a fine of €500 and a one year disqualification.
