Gerry Warnock said he has spoken to several staff and the last thing they wanted was for this to escalate to this point

A Longford general election candidate and former County Council Cathaoirleach has said he is in "total solidarity" with the staff of St Christopher's in their decision to commence industrial action".

Independent representative Gerry Warnock believes over 130 staff at a Longford-based intellectual disabilities provider are close to commencing industrial action over an ongoing row over pay.

"Having spoken with several staff members after the last threat of action, I can tell you that the last thing they wanted was for this to escalate to this point," he said.

"This issue should have been put to bed long ago. St. Christopher's, no more than any other company's greatest asset is their staff and those hardworking people should not have to fight so hard for their entitlement. I sincerely hope that the people of Longford support their efforts."

Last May proposed industrial action in St Christopher’s Services, Longford was postponed, pending the start of talks in the Workplace Relations Commission

The issue is one which has been a persistent issue for St Christopher's and talks have taken place at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).
