There is widespread sadness in Longford, Cavan and beyond following news of the death of 'loyal GAA supporter' and man of 'boundless energy' Donal Brady.

The late Donal of Aughafad, Longford and formerly of Gurteen, Arva, Co Cavan, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the Mater Hospital, Dublin on Monday, September 16, following a brief illness.

A highly respected farmer and steeped in GAA, Donal was Chairperson of Longford Slashers from 2009 to 2016, a glorious spell during which the club captured the Sean Connolly Cup on three occasions - 2010, ‘11 & ‘13, with Donal's son Dermot lifting the silverware each time also making those triumphs extra special for the Brady family.

Longford Slashers said the club are in mourning following Donal's unexpected passing.

In a tribute posted on social media, Slashers outlined that Donal's 'passing has left a void which will be difficult to fill, such was his contribution to the Flipeadoiri in many aspects, but particularly so during his tenure as Chairperson, when we won three senior championships and one senior league title'.

"Donal set goals in which he invested sponsorship, time, focus, initiative and boundless energy into and his sense of humour was an added bonus. He is regarded as being in the top echelon of those who guided the club over the past 70 years.
"While our loss is palpable, our thoughts are especially with his family. His wife Mary, son Dermot (who contributed hugely to the club over the past 30 years), his daughters Catherine, Sinéad, Valerie and Marie and extended families, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam."
A Longford GAA spokesperson said Donal was a tremendously loyal supporter of Longford GAA county teams and indeed was a man steeped in the GAA, initially in his native Cavan and then when he came to live in Longford through his involvement with Longford Slashers GAA Club where he was Chairperson from 2009 to 2016 and Club President from 2019 to 2021.
"Longford GAA wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to Donal's wife Mary, daughters Catherine, Sinéad, Valerie, and Marie, son Dermot, sister Kathleen, brothers James and John Joe, and the extended Brady family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Longford LGFA also expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the late Donal Brady. "Donal was a great GAA man. His daughter, Marie, played for Clonguish and Longford for many years with great distinction. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam."
The late Donal Brady was pre-deceased by his parents Thomas and Catherine, sister Patricia, brothers Paddy, Thomas, Philip, Fr. Charlie, Gerard and Fr. Vincent.

He will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his family, his beloved wife Mary, daughters Catherine (Paul), Sinéad (Myles), Valerie (Gary) and Marie (Stephen), son Dermot (Annmarie), sister Kathleen, brothers James and John Joe, grandchildren Jack, Darragh, Tom, Charlie, Alice, Jamie, Lara and Joe, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives , his loyal staff at Carrickboy Farms and friends. May he rest in peace.

He will lie in repose at Glennon’s Funeral Home, Ballinalee Road (N39 EC81) on Thursday, September 19 from 4pm concluding with prayers at 8pm. Mass of the Resurrection takes place on Friday, September 20 in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Carrickedmond at 12 noon, interment afterwards in Carrickedmond cemetery.
