There was a deep sense of regret in the area last Sunday week, September 8, when word spread of the peaceful passing of Kathleen Newman, formerly of Drumnacrehir, who died at her home in Mullingar.
Kathleen was eighty-two years of age and was one of five children of the late Andrew and Margaret Newman and resided in Mullinalaghta, where she was educated in Aughnagarron School, before going to work as a housekeeper for a family in Offaly involved in the horseracing industry for many years before her retirement whereupon she moved to Mullingar.
Margaret was a friendly and sociable woman who had many fond memories of her time in Mullinalaghta and took a great interest in her nieces and nephews and their offspring. She had a great love for animals and in particular took care of stray cats living near her home.

She was predeceased by her parents, by her sisters Mary Newman and Margaret Leonard (Kildare) who passed away earlier this year, and by her brother Bartley.

She is survived by her brother Andrew (Clooneen), her sister-in-law Vera, her brother-in-law Pat, her nephews Brian and Andrew, her nieces Margaret and Veronica, her cousins, her neighbours and a large circle of friends to whom we offer our deepest sympathies. Her funeral took place last Wednesday in St Columba’s Church with Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Michael Bannon P.P. assisted by her neighbour Fr Simon Cadam, and was followed by her interment in Mullinalaghta cemetery.
