Renowned local historian John Casey is to launch his new book, ‘Shannonside Tales’ in St Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro on Saturday, September 21 at 2pm.

Celebrated local author Jack Harte will be in attendance to present the new book.

The book covers many aspects of the community's history from both sides of the River. Lanesborough - Longford and Ballyleague - Roscommon.

Much is written about the Fight for Independence and many of the skirmishes and actions in both Longford and Roscommon are fully detailed.

Other chapters cover the Fair Days, and Regatta’s that were once an annual feature of the community. Prominent locals and important visitors are also featured as is the varied local architecture and sections  covering the River and the Bridge.

A total of 33 chapters gives a comprehensive history of the area, with 100’s of photographs to enhance the stories.

The book is not all John’s work. Major contributions have been made by Tommy Murray and by historian Sean Ó Súilleabháin.

Priced at €20 the books will be available to purchase at the launch and afterwards at O’Briens Lanesboro, and Newsround in both Longford and Roscommon.
