Siobhán Cullen the new Principal of Meán Scoil Mhuire, Longford
Ballyleague woman Siobhán Cullen will be taking over as Principal of Meán Scoil Mhuire, Longford in September. The passionate educator is looking forward to leading the Longford town school.
She has vast experience to bring to the job and it is clear from talking to her that every student matters.
“I am hoping to continue the tradition of the Mercy sisters, which includes respect, tolerance and the well being of students,” she told the Leader.
“The students of Meán Scoil Mhuire will be exposed to the rich cultural heritage of the school. These include the values of tolerance and respect for diversity. I want the students to grow spiritually and morally,” Ms Cullen added.
She takes over a school with around 600 students. The last principal was Aoife Mulrennan. Mairéad Lyons then served as Acting Principal. Both have retired.
“I aim to work with stakeholders to continue the good work that has been done. I believe that a school is a microcosm of the community that it is situated in. Longford now has a diverse population,” she stated.
Apart from her experience in different schools, Ms Cullen is also highly qualified in education. Most recently, she completed a Masters of Education, which she acquired from the University of Ulster.
Such upskilling has given her a broad perspective on the value of education for all levels of students.
“Covid has had an impact on education, including on retention levels. The reality is that for some students, school may not be their favourite place,” she stated.
“School should be enjoyable and every student should be helped,” Ms Cullen added.
Apart from the students in her care, Ms Cullen is also very aware of parents being accommodated also.
“I want to act as an advocate for parents. Some parents might find the atmosphere of school to be imposing,” she commented.
Of course, the staff are also important to Ms Cullen. “I want to enhance student and staff wellbeing. Supports needs to be extended to families,” she stated.
She feels that technology is one of the challenges that students face. “Technology has exposed students to different issues. We will cater as best as we can for the needs of girls. We will also look after students with additional educational needs,” Ms Cullen commented.
Outside of the classroom, she will also encourage her students to engage in other activities.
“Meán Scoil Mhuire has a wide range of extra curricular activities, from debating to sports,” she stated.
The possibility of Meán Scoil Mhuire and St Mel’s College amalgamating has been discussed previously.
“Both schools provide an excellent standard of education and have strong enrolments. The Department of Education and the trustees with CEIST will be responsible for that decision,” she said.
CEIST is a group of five catholic congregations that are engaged in post primary education. CEIST schools aim to provide a holistic education in the catholic tradition.
Ms Cullen found herself being inspired by her teachers at an early age. “I went to school with Mercy Sisters in Lanesborough. I developed a passion for education. Different teachers inspired me. These included Sisters Margaret, Judith and Kathleen,” she explained.
In more recent years, Ms Cullen worked as a Home School Community Liaison Coordinator in Ballymahon Vocational School.
She was subsequently appointed Deputy Principal of the school. Her last position was Principal of Elphin Community College.
She attended UCD and then qualified to be a teacher in NUIG.
The mother of two children, Ms Cullen enjoys reading and music in her spare time. She also sings in a choir.
“I am looking forward to meeting the staff and students,” Ms Cullen stated.
