Longford TD appeals 'for calm' in the aftermath of frightening shooting incident

Longford TD Joe Flaherty has condemned the drive by shooting which took place in Longford town last night (Wednesday).

The incident occurred at approximately 7:50 pm in the Springlawn area. 

Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating following reports of a discharge of a firearm at a residential premises in Longford town, yesterday evening (Wednesday).

The injured man was rushed to Mullingar Hospital where he is being treated for injuries which gardaí believe to be serious but non-life threatening.

The scene is currently cordoned off for technical examination.

Deputy Flaherty has “appealed for calm” in the light of the incident.

“My thoughts are with the victim. I understand that this man was never involved in feuding,” Deputy Flaherty stated.

“The use of guns is a troubling escalation of feuding. This is a frightening incident for local residents,” he added.

The Fianna Fail Deputy doesn’t think that increased Gardai in Longford would be a deterrent to this type of crime.

“You can never have enough Gardai. However, someone made a conscious decision to carry out this act,” he stated.

In relation to gun use in Longford, Deputy Flaherty described it as an “isolated incident.”

“I would appeal for calm,” he stated.
