Former Longford-based RTÉ journalist Ciaran Mullooly celebrated his first day on the job as a Member of the European Parliament for the Midlands–North-West constituency.
Ciaran worked for RTÉ from 1993 to 2021, where he was the RTÉ News Midlands correspondent for 26 years.
Sharing a post with his followers on Facebook, he said: " It’s like the first day at school…. all over again!! Today is the first official day of the new job - I am honoured to sit in at the full plenary meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
"I am also pleased to confirm my new role on the agriculture and regional development committees in Brussels - more on that later in the week. I thank each and everyone who helped me in any way to get here to the parliament - especially the voters - and I pledge to keep you up to date on our activities as the days and weeks go on. If you would like to get a regular newsletter from my office in Brussels and Strasbourg - please email ciaran.mullooly@europarl.europa.eu. "
After retiring from RTÉ in 2021, after 26 years, the Lanesboro native, took up a "more central role" focusing around Longford tourism.
The former journalist and author started his career as a reporter in the Longford Leader in 1985, later moving to RTÉ, where he worked on the Ear To The Ground show before becoming the broadcaster's midlands correspondent in 1995.
He served as chairman of Longford tourism almost 20 years ago.
