REVEALED | The preferred route for multi million euro N4 Mullingar to Longford upgrade has been unveiled

Third public consultation on much delayed N4 project begins today

The preferred route for the upgrade of the N4 has been revealed.

The third non-statutory public consultation for the much delayed N4 Mullingar to Longford (Rooskey) upgrade begins today (Tuesday).

The consultation team is hosting these events based on the Emerging Preferred Route Corridor (EPRC).

Earlier this year, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) announced €1.4 million in funding for the N4 project.

That sum has funded this stage of the project.

Longford Fianna Fail TD Joe Flaherty spoke to the Leader about the importance of this project for the county.

“The upgrade of this road would reduce journey time on the N4. It would also make the road safer. This year so far has been a horrendous one for deaths on the roads,” he stated.

“This is a major issue for people in the region. They are waiting to see if it will effect their land,” Deputy Flaherty added.

The TD stressed the importance of this consultative phase of the proposed upgrade of the N4.

“The regulatory side of this upgrade must take place. The whole upgrade is a long progress. There are possible issues in relation to Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO’s) and the possibility of legal challenges,” he commented.

That said, Deputy Flaherty expects the upgrade process to “move at a significant pace.”

“The next stage of funding is expected to be in TII funding next year,” he added.

Deputy Flaherty also said that there was “no indication” of what the proposed upgrade would cost.

The first consultation event takes place today (Tuesday, July 2) in the Longford Arms Hotel from 2pm to 8pm.

Another such event takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, July 3) in the Mullingar Park Hotel from 2pm-8pm.

The last of the three events will take place on Thursday, July 4 in Edgeworthstown from 2pm-8pm.

A virtual consultation will also be available to access via the project website n4mullingartolongford.ie on those days.
