North Longford set for heritage festival

A midsummer festival celebrating Granard's rich and diverse heritage is set to take place on the weekend of Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 7.
The Suntown Festival is inspired by the olden gaelic term Grian Árd which relates back to Granard being a beacon hill and sacred site.

The official opening will take place on Friday, July 5 at 7.30pm in Granard Townhall, with thanks to Longford Library Services.
Granard Community Writer's Group will open the festival with a performance of 'Diary of a Town' by Noel Monahan. Followed by music by Granard's own singer songwriter Jamie Cunningham.
On Saturday evening, July 6, at Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre there will be outdoor entertainment with trad by John Dungan CCÉ, spoken word by Marty Mulligan and top class Irish rock with Cronin.

Characters from Ireland's ancient past and fire dancers will lead a fire lighting ceremony on Granard Hill. Followed by music, song and dance by a band of local creatives.
On Sunday morning, July 7 all are invited to gather for a morning of midsummer mindfulness; learning from our past, being present and looking towards our future.

Déirdre Orme, speaking on behalf of Suntown, said, "Suntown is an opportunity for everyone to shine. Everyone is welcome to take part or come along and enjoy the literature, music, spoken word, pageantry and performances.
“Hopefully there's something there for everyone to enjoy."
Ms Orme added, “Thanks to everyone so far for their support and assistance; Longford Arts, Longford Community Safety Partnership, Longford Tourism and Longford Library Services.”
