Independent Alliance.

“There were overtures from the likes of Renua and parties but having met and held talks with Michael Fitzmaurice and Shane Ross, they just impressed me with their vision and what they want to achieve in politics,” he said.

The chartered accountant said another factor was the freedom being part of an Indepedent grouping would provide.

“There is no party whip, you are still and independent and have access to other TDs and knowledge which is such a great resource to tap into,” he told the Leader.

Last Saturday’s gathering in Athlone was not the group’s formal launch, but rather a meeting to ready prospective candidates for the next election. Alongside Mr Morgan, former Green Party TD Paul Gogarty was one of seven new candidates announced by the group. Mr Morgan said he intends holding an official campaign launch in due course in a bid to drum up support in his election bid.

Besides Mr Morgan, Longford was also represented at the weekend gathering by Cllr Mark Casey and political commentator Jonny Fallon.
