The second count in the Longford/Westmeath By-election resulted in the elimination of Westmeath’s Labour candidate, Cllr Denis Leonard.
The count was created from the distribution of Jackson and McNamaras’ votes which went in every direction here in Kenagh tonight.
Brian Fagan (Ind) received an additional 183 votes bringing his total to 4,378; Paul hogan (SF) received 129 votes, total 7,677; Denis Leonard (Ind) 62; Gab McFadden (FG) 94, total 12,459; Boxer Moran, 220, total 5,849; James Morgan (Ind), 137, total 6,096; and Angeus O’Rourke received an additional 56 votes, bringing his total vote after the second count to 8,966.
Labour’s Denis Leonard has subsequently been eliminated from the race.
It is very likely at this stage that the new TD for Longford/Westmeath will be Gab McFadden, sister of the late TD, Nicky McFadden.
