honours two stalwarts

The Longford Association in Dublin will honour two of its own when its members meet for the association’s annual dinner next month.

Long-serving committee member Liam Caldwell has been named as the association’s ‘Person of the Year’ for 2014, while businessman Tom Gilligan is set to receive this year’s ‘Special Recognition Award’.

“I hadn’t seen it coming,” Liam said of his nomination. “Immediate doubts propelled me to respectfully request the committee to withdraw my name, but they weren’t having any of it!”

Liam, who retired from his position at Eircom’s Network Management Centre in 2010, first joined the association in the mid-1980s and soon found himself on the committee. Since then he has served in every role except treasurer.

Meanwhile, well-known businessman Tom Gilligan, who is a native of Abbeylara, will be recognised for his successes in the business world and for his lifetime of involvement with the GAA, both in his native parish and in Dublin.

This year also marks a major milestone for the association itself, as 2014 is the 60th year for its annual dinner event.

The dinner will be held on Saturday, April 12 at the Red Cow Moran Hotel in Dublin. The Red Cow Moran Hotel is also offering guests special rate of €89 for two people sharing, which includes breakfast.
