Senator Micheal Carrigy has welcomed substantial funding allocations for Granard and Moyne under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), an initiative by Minister Heather Humphreys' Department of rural and community development. Allocations have been confirmed include €200,000 funding allocated for the enhancement of the existing Granard Greenway for the provision of lighting and €200,000 funding for Moyne Amphitheatre and Legga Car Park.
"I am thrilled with this funding allocations for Granard and Moyne. These projects are vital for our local community, offering improved recreational facilities and supporting local tourism. The enhancements to the Granard Greenway and the development of Moyne Amphitheatre and Legga Car Park will provide lasting benefits for residents and visitors," Senator Carrigy commented.
"This investment underscores our commitment to rural development and the continuous improvement of our local infrastructure. I want to thank Minister Heather Humphreys and her Department for recognising the importance of these projects and for their ongoing support,” he added.
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has pledged a €16.1 million investment in outdoor recreation projects right across the country.
Projects being funded include Greenways, Blueways, Forest Parks and Cycling Routes.
New walking trails will be established for the first time, along with projects that will support outdoor sports such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, swimming and other water-based activities.
“This investment from my Department brings the overall allocation under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) to over €129 million since the Scheme was first launched in 2016,” Minister Humphreys stated.
“It is testament to the positive impact ‘Our Rural Future’ continues to have on communities all over Ireland and the Government's commitment to that policy.
“The times of lockdowns are thankfully behind us but those times gave us all an appreciation of what our stunning outdoors had to offer us for our mental and physical wellbeing,” the minister added.
This funding will be invested in 69 larger scale outdoor recreation projects, bringing the total number of projects funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development, since its establishment in 2017, to over 1,650 nationwide.
