The village of Aughnacliffe was honoured at a Civic Recognition event in Longford County Council on Friday, May 17. The event was led by Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray.

Aughnacliffe were honoured for their success having won in the 300-1,000 Population Category at the IPB Pride of Place Awards late last year. These awards acknowledge the work done every day by communities all over Ireland. The awards are hosted by Co-Operation Ireland.

Award-winning Aughnacliffe was celebrated for the community-led development of the small north Longford village. The village’s development includes many local amenities including its community centre, which hosts many classes and concerts, and the Dolmen Club for older people.

Lough Leebeen has been developed for outdoor pursuits including scenic walks and fishing. It also has a children's playground and a fairy garden. The 'heritage trail' is a new attraction taking walkers on a tour of historic areas, including an ancient neolithic dolmen. The village also has a vibrant GAA club, a primary school, playschool and after school.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray said, “It is great to celebrate Aughnacliffe and its community, including the 25 committees, clubs, and groups, who have developed this local area.

This village has so much to offer residents and visitors. It is great to have their work recognised both at the Pride of Place Awards, and here today at this civic recognition event.”
