This June 15 will see the celebration of Longford Town’s inaugural Pride Parade. Event organisers are hoping to put together a fun day of colour, creativity, music and craic that provides a safe, positive and visible space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community in Longford and helps celebrate diversity, inclusion and equality.
Event organisers - Bula Bula Samba Band need volunteer support to produce this event and are reaching out to any potential volunteers interested in attending a meeting in Longford Library Tuesday, April 23 at 7.30pm.
In particular, they would like to invite members of Longford’s LGBTQIA+ community. Traditionally confined to big cities, Ireland has seen a massive growth of Pride events and festivals in rural towns over the last few years. Usually taking place in June or July, Pride festivals have grown to become large public festive events with cultural, musical and spectacle offerings to rival any good Summer festival.
Longford’s first Pride will include a parade through Longford town, street music entertainment and a dedicated evening festival club.
Bula Bula band leader and Longford Pride chair Caroline Lewis said, “Whether you are LGBTQ+ or simply an ally of the community, Longford Pride represents a great opportunity to get involved, have fun and make Longford a place where everyone feels safe, accepted and included.
“We need lots of volunteers to help us with all aspects of the day including marketing, stewarding, performing and making banners. Come along to the library next Tuesday, April 23 and lend your support.”
Longford Pride is supported by County Longford Arts Service and Creative Ireland – Longford.
