Facilitating pedestrians to cross Bridge Street at the top of Longford town was a motion considered at the February meeting of Longford MD.
Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi called on Longford County Council to implement a Low Cost Safety Scheme to facilitate safe crossing of pedestrians in front of the cinema and the apartment buildings across the road.
Cllr Adejinmi told members she received correspondence from residents of the apartments in the vicinity who said crossing the road was hazardous.
The Fianna Fáil councillor said there were a number of incidents in which there were near misses for pedestrians crossing the road.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Seamus Butler, however Cllr Butler said he had reservations about the sight distance for vehicles rounding the bend on the road.
In his reply Senior Executive Engineer, Eamonn Bennett, said the matter would be referred to the Roads Department for consideration, but agreed with Cllr Butler's observation on the necessary sight lines for vehicles to stop.
Mr Bennett also said there were not a great deal of commercial interests on the cinema side of the road.
