Thousands of people from Longford and far beyond visited the newly re-opened St Mel’s Cathedral at the weekend.

Thousands of people from Longford and far beyond visited the newly re-opened St Mel’s Cathedral at the weekend.

The Cathedral re-opened to the public on Saturday morning, and throughout the weekend a steady stream of people came to view the refurbished landmark.

Large crowds attended the first Masses to be held in the Cathedral for five years .

The weekend re-opening was a triumph for all those involved in the reconstruction of the Cathedral and the sorrow of five years ago was replaced with joy and delight as it opened its doors once again.

This week, the national and international spotlight will be on St Mel’s Cathedral as both the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and the Christmas Morning Mass will be broadcast live on RTÉ television.
