Longford town is now a no go area for Heavy Goods Vehicles. Transport Infrastructure Ireland signed off on the change to divert HGVs from Longford town last November.
Since then TII has erected the signage indicating the restricted access for HGVs to Longford town centre.
At the January meeting of Longford MD, Cllr Seamus Butler said it will improve the experience of shoppers in the town centre: “I very much welcome this. It comes almost 18 months after I introduced the motion to get HGVs out of Longford.
“With the introduction of the cycle lanes in Longford town this will be seen as a game changer for the town.
“Up to this we have had lorries going through the town for no reason whatsoever. Hopefully this will now stop,” Cllr Butler said.
