At a recent meeting of the Midland Regional Authority, Cllr Micheal Carrigy (FG) raised the issue of the proposed closure of the Garda station in Ballinalee.
Cllr Carrigy said the closure would be a “very poor decision” and blamed the gardaí for identifying the station as vulnerable in the first instance.
“The Garda authorities identified the station as one for closure, while other more rural stations have not been affected,” the local area representative said.
“The strategic position in which the station is located on the main Granard - Longford road is vital, and I have asked that a letter be forwarded to the Garda Commissioner in the Pheonix Park outlining our objections and requesting details of the rationale used to identify Ballinalee Garda Station for closure.”
Cllr Carrigy said the decision to close the garda station should be reversed.
