Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Colm Murray and Laura McPhillips with a group of youngsters at the Longford Comhairle na nÓg annual Youth Conference in the Longford Arms Hotel
Longford Comhairle na nÓg held their annual Youth Conference in the Longford Arms Hotel on Thursday, November 9, 2023.
It was hosted by Longford County council, coordinated by Foróige and planned and facilitated by members of Longford Comhairle na nÓg and assisted by adult facilitators from various agencies.
The day was opened by the Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Colm Murray, who spoke about the work of the Comhairle and their contributions to areas such as Autism Awareness and Mental Health. Laura McPhillips was also in attendance and assisted in the facilitation of the conference.
A Comhairle na nÓg Youth Conference is an annual meet up of a diverse group of invited and interested young people from county Longford, aged 12-17 years. They discuss and explore issues and matters of importance to young people and highlight the most important issue for them, at this current moment. It also enables them to give feedback with their solutions and actions that can be taken to help the issue. It also assists in welcoming new members to Comhairle after the conference.
Longford Comhairle na nÓg Coordinator Glenda O'Reilly explained, “The day was full of discussion of the topics that are important to the young people of County Longford who represented the nine schools in the county, Longford Youth Services and the Senior Girl Guides.
“The main topics discussed were vaping/smoking, bullying but the most discussed topic and the topic that got the World Café discussions buzzing was school / exam stress. This was the most voted topic on the day and will now be the basis for the work carried out by our Comhairle na nÓg in 2024.”
Ms O’Reilly added, “A special mention to all the facilitators of the Digital hub and the Team Games and Circus Skills Workshops who allowed all our young people to experience fun activities during the conference.
“We would like to thank everyone who attended and participated so well on the day and a massive thanks to all the adult facilitators who made this event possible.”
