A young Leitrim man whose mother “had a lot to say" to him avoided a criminal conviction when he made a donation to the court poor box.

Ultan Kelly (19) of Quay Street, Drumsna, Leitrim was charged with the unlawful possession of cannabis at The Mall Longford Longford on June 19, 2022 at 10:30am.

Sergeant Mark Mahon said the defendant came to Garda attention on the date of the incident and a search yielded a small quantity of cannabis. Mr Kelly made admission of ownership of the drug.

The court was told the defendant had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client is a trainee electrician who “learned a valuable life lesson”. Mr Gearty said: “Believe me your honour, Mr Kelly's mother had a lot to say to him about this.”

Judge Bernadette Owens said that if the defendant had a donation of €350 for the court poor box she would strike the matter out. Mr Kelly had the money in court and the case was concluded.
