Two people are expected to appear in court later this month following a series of Garda raids in north Longford last week.

Gardai from Granard and Edgeworthstown carried out the searches as part of Operation Edict-a specially designed initiative aimed at tackling local burglary rates.

Around €1500 worth of stolen property, including electrical equipment and furniture were seized by officers along with a small quantity of cocaine.

Various drug making paraphernalia and an immitation firearm were also found and taken away for analysis.

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene in an operation which was backed up by Customs and Excise officials.

Both of the suspects were brought to Granard Garda Station and questioned.

They were charged a short time later in connection to a number of burglaries in the greater Edgeworthstown area over the last month.

Both suspects are aged in their early 30s and are scheduled to appear in court later this month.

Since its introduction last July, Operation Edict has proved a major hit in tackling crime rates at a local level.

“Operation Edict has been very much about keeping an eye on our targets,” he said.
