Theresa McDermott Quinn raised €15,500 for LARCC with Trek with Theresa last year
After the phenomenal success of last year's Trek with Theresa the walk returns next weekend with a new beneficiary.
Last August Theresa McDermott Quinn, her family and friends took the trek across Ardagh mountain and raised €15,500 for LARCC.
Close to 400 people turned out to show solidarity with the Longford woman as she raised funds for the leading cancer support charity.
The event is returning for 2023: “We leave from the GAA pitch in Ardagh and go around the mountain,” Theresa said of the fundraising journey, “It is a 5km walk, but there is a shorter route for people just up and down the mountain that's around 2km. We recommend the shorter walk for anyone who wants to do it with children.”
Theresa told the Leader taht last year's outing exceeded her expectations: “I had just finished treatment for cancer last year and that was why I took on Trek to raise funds for LARCC. I didn’t really intend to do it this year, but my cancer returned and I’m back on ongoing treatments.
“I want to make it a yearly event and hope to raise money for different worthy causes every year.”
The funds raised this year will go to St Brigids Gaels LGFA: “They have been very supportive since I was first diagnosed and provided all the refreshments last year. They appointed me as their first president of the club at this year's AGM. It’s nice to be able to give something back to my own community.”
Theresa says the Club is a very worthy beneficiary: “They are the backbone of everything in the community. It's my way of giving something back to them as they have been so good to me.
“We have fabulous facilities at the Ardagh Moydow GGG club and they are so important to the locality. ”
The mother of one is coping well with her diagnosis: “It's going well at the moment. Unfortunately I was re-diagnosed in November last year.
“I have another tumour in a different place, but I have been put on treatment that is workable. I can live my life as normal. I have check ups every three months, everything is well at the moment. Long may it last.”
The Trek with Theresa takes place on this Saturday, August 19 at 12:00noon starting and finishing at Ardagh GAA pitch.
