Senator Micheal Carrigy with members of Longford Variety Group
Longford’s general public have been hailed for their “absolutely fantastic” support towards a novel Longford Variety Group fundraising initiative.
The long established voluntary group are arguably one of the county’s leading proponents of charity work and raising vital funds for Longford Hospice.
In order to meet ever increasing financial costs ahead of its November Show in Longford’s Backstage Theatre, the group have kick-started a 100km in May challenge.
The premise behind the idea challenges participants to walk or run 100km through the month of May while raising valuable monies for the group as a whole.
Chairman Charlie Murray said the concept has already seen up to 15 people sign up, among whom include Fine Gael Senator Micheal Carrigy and Independent Cllr Gerry Warnock.
“We are nearly three weeks into it at this stage,” he said.
“Unfortunately everything has rocketed through the roof. One of the girls came up with this idea and a lot of people have come on board.”
Charlie singled out Aileen Keogh Daly for masterminding a fundraiser which has also seen over €2,200 being generated online.
“At the minute, it is costing around €10,000 just to get the show on in November. We have a karaoke event planned in August which is always a well supported event.”
The drive has also attracted the attention of celebrity, singer and television presenter Una Healy who posted an video online in recent days to garner further support for the event.
Charlie said the response, to date, has been nothing short of overwhelming.
“The people of Longford have been absolutely fantastic,” he said.
“They always come out and support Longford Variety Group and they never let us down.”
Charlie said the group are still appealing for donations and are keen to talk to any local businesses who would be keen to likewise throw their weight behind the fundraiser.
