Gardai from Edgeworthstown had a lucky escape last night after a patrol car was rammed during a high speed chase across County Longford.
The chase started at around 2am when a van was spotted acting suspiciously on the N4, a short distance from the mid Longford town.
When gardai approached, the van suddenly sped off in the direction of Legan. It was there, the van which was carrying a trailer and quad bike, careered into the patrol car before continuing up a rural road.
The driver and another man fled on foot. Gardai believe they may have flagged down a passing car as they made their escape.
Despite gardai revealing they are following a definite line of inquiry, officers are hoping to track down a green coloured Hyundai car that was overtaken by the suspects during the course of the chase.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Granard Garda Station at 043 6686512.
