Gardaí seek public’s help
following spate of robberies

Gardaí in Longford are appealing to the public for its assistance following a number of thefts and burglaries this week.

Between February 25 and 26 last, an Audi A4 was stolen from outside a house in the Ard Michael estate just off the Ballinalee Road in Longford town. Around the same time, members of the Divisional Drugs Unit made a swoop on a house at McEoin Park in Longford town and discovered over €2,000-worth of Cannabis plants. A man has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

Last Thursday, February 27 between 2pm and 3pm a white and red Yamaha Motor Bike was taken from from the Convent Road in Longford town.

Later that evening a woman left her home at Foynes Court on the outskirts of Longford town to attend a social gathering with friends. When she returned to the house a couple of hours later, she discovered the front door of her home kicked in. The house had been ransacked and Gardaí confirmed to the Leader that a number of checkbooks were stolen in the incident. On the same date between 7:30pm, and 11:45pm and in the same area of town, thieves broke into a house through a rear window in Foynes Court and stole a sum of cash. Gardaí are seeking the public’s help with the matter as investigations continue.

A burglary also occurred at Cahanagh Cross, Drumlish Road, Longford on February 27 last. The owner of the property was asleep in bed when the house was broken into and her handbag stolen. Gardaí confirmed that approximately €170 was taken from the bag which was later discovered hanging from a gate post outside the property. Damage was also caused to the backdoor during the incident. The primary school in Newtownforbes was also targeted by thieves at the weekend. A laptop and €30 was taken from the school and gardaí are currently reviewing CCTV as part of their investigation into the matter.
