Longford Municipal District Meet the Candidate: Alicia Carberry, Independent
Independent candidate Alicia Carberry believes the time has come to bring a fresh voice, fresh ideas and fresh energy to Longford County Council.
The Carberry name is synonymous with local politics, with Alicia’s father Tony previously serving as a Fianna Fáil and Independent councillor.
Alicia thinks there is a gap for a strong female, Independent voice in Longford and given her background she believes she is someone ‘who can relate to the working class people’.
She explained, “There are many issues at local level which time and again are not being addressed, nor are there any real, lasting solutions delivered to the people that need them the most.
“That's where I believe I can make a real and meaningful difference.”
Alicia described mothers and carers as ‘the backbone of our community’ yet ‘they are simply not being respected, listened to or provided for’.
She remarked, “The most vulnerable people are being overlooked and that has to stop.”
Alicia believes greater resourcing and dedicated funding streams are required to address the lack of support for children with special needs, for carers, for those suffering the ill effects of Alzheimer's and Dementia, and to help people with mental health issues.
If elected, Alicia intends to lobby for every single penny to ensure these much needed services and supports are put in place.
