On Sunday, December 4 a host of trucks will descend on Longford Town to take part in an event to raise money for two charities and honour the memory of a young Longford man who tragically lost his life this time last year.

“We have to do a charity event as part of our college course,” organiser Katie McGinnity explained the background.

The other part of that “we” is Emily Reilly. The young ladies are undertaking a course in Business and Management at TU, Dublin.

“We decided to do a Truck Run in memory of my brother,” Katie said. And so the Brian McGinnity memorial Truck Run was created. Brian tragically lost his live in a single vehicle road collision 12 months ago.

“We are raising money for Vita Hose and Cian's Kennels. All the trucks will meet in one location. The car park in Providers.

They will then start out on the route. It's a circular course from Longford to Edgeworthstown then on to Ballymahon and back to Longford.

“It has a dual function; it raises money, but it also raises awareness of the work done by Vita House and Cian's Kennels,” Katie outlined.

The organiser says it's a good way to honour her brother's memory: “My dad loves trucks and Brian had a real interest in trucks. It's just a way to bring people together for good causes.”

Earlier this year Katie and her father, Eoin McGinnity, travelled across the continent to transport a huge truck load of humanitarian aid to Ukrainians forced to flee their home following the Russian invasion.

The father daughter team travelled to Romania with the aid. This route will be considerably shorter.

Katie is anticipating a good number of participants: “We are expecting around 100 trucks to join on the day.

All proceeds raised will be donated to the Vita House Family Centre counselling services who have been a great help to the McGinnity family in recent times and also to Cian’s Kennels CLG who help bring pets closer to sick children and their families.”

The fundraising on the date will be added to by an online option: “We have an iDonate page set up and any money raised on the day will be donated to the charities.”

The registration is 10 to 12:30 with the Run set to start at 1pm. “We are hoping to have a raffle before we start. There will be a food truck at the registration site. We hope people will come along and have a look at the truck and make a day of it. It will be good fun.”
