Minister of State for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development, Mr Seán Canney TD, launched the ‘Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce Implementation Review 2018’ on Wednesday, February 20, in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
Ms Christine Collins, Longford County Council’s Broadband Officer, was a guest speaker on the day and she highlighted some of the excellent work being completed by Longford County Council in relation to Broadband rollout and mobile voice and data coverage.
Other speakers included, Mr Jeremy Godfrey, Commissioner for Communications Regulation (Comreg) and Mayo county council’s digital officer, Mr Stephen Carolan.
During her speech, Ms Collins outlined the recent mobile coverage survey completed by the council, which highlighted a number of positives for the Longford in relation to coverage on all national primary roads. She noted that it also successfully led to the council working in partnership with a number of telecom operators and other stakeholders.
Ms Collins then discussed the Digital Schools initiative being undertaken by the Council’s IT Section and one which is currently underway for all primary schools in the County. The initiative aims to help create awareness of the National Broadband Plan for children and their families for the area in which they live.
The project is aimed at helping participants understand the terms used in relation to the technologies and the services on offer from broadband providers in their area.
There is a prize fund of €2,700 available as part of the Digital project and Longford County Council (LCC) have urged all primary schools to take part.
LCC hope to visit every school in the county, presenting information on the National Broadband plan, as well as the associated broadband terminology to 5th and 6th class students.
Participating schools will then be invited to enter a competition which will be confined to schools within your Municipal District Area.
Three school projects will be selected from each Municipal District Area with prizes of One for All vouchers to the value of 1st €500, 2nd €250 and 3rd €150 in each district.
Projects will be assessed by an independent adjudicator with the closing date for applications set for Friday, April 5. A presentation ceremony will then be held in Longford County Council offices.
Any school interested in taking part in the project should email broadbandofficer@longfordcoco.ie or contact 043 33 46231
