A Longford family is calling for the public’s support after a loved one’s grave was desecrated at Ballymacormack Cemetery on Sunday.

Speaking to the Leader, Winnie Stokes, the daughter of the late Martin Nevin whose grave was destroyed by vandals said the family are devastated by what happened.

“The grave was desecrated between 5pm and 7pm on Sunday,” she said, before pointing out that the family are certain the matter is “not feud related”.

“Martin was a very good and caring man and his wife who is now 83 years of age is devastated by what has happened.”

Ms Stokes went on to say that the family cannot understand why somebody would do something like this.

“We don’t know why this has happened and we are appealing to anyone who saw anything at the cemetery on Sunday evening to make contact,” she continued.

“A woman already told me that when she was leaving the cemetery at around 5pm on Sunday evening, the grave was perfect; something happened after that.

“To do this to a loved one’s grave in these days of Christmas is so heartbreaking.

“Please help us to find who did this.”
