Stock piles of grit available at locations across Longford

Longford County Council’s has implemented Winter Service Plan

Met Éireann has issued an Orange Weather Alert for Longford for today, Wednesday, and this will be upgraded to Red Alert tomorrow, Thursday.

Longford County Council’s Winter Service Plan will be implemented over the coming days. The priority is to keep all main roads in the county passable throughout this severe weather event. 

The Council will endeavour to treat other roads depending on availability of resources and the severity of the weather.

The Council has made stock piles of grit available at a number of locations throughout the County for use by communities, if required.

The Winter Service Plan, a map outlining the main roads that are being treated and the locations of grit stock piles for public use, are available on the Council’s website  -

Lanesboro                    Car park beside the playground.

Ballymahon                  Outside the GAA pitch on the N55.

Kenagh                         Old Community hall, Ballymahon road.

Edgeworthstown          GAA Car park, Ballymahon road.

Newtowncashel            Old quarry entrance, beside the GAA pitch.

Ardagh                          Car park/open area behind the playground.



Moyne                              Moyne Chip Dump

Legga Church                Carpark opposite Dromard GAA Pitch

Smear Road                    Ladies Road at Junction with Aughnacliffe Arva Road

Granard Depot 

Abbeylara                         GAA Car Park

Willsbrook Cross  

Toome,  Mullinalaghta    Mc Governs

Aughnacliffe Village       Open space close to Public House

Members of the public are being advised to stay indoors from 4pm tomorrow, Thursday, and to stay indoors until at least midday on Friday.  Longford County Council will continue to monitor weather conditions and respond as required.

Due to the severe weather, the offices of Longford County Council will be closed for normal services from close of business today, Wednesday 28th February until Monday morning, 5th March.


Longford County Council will continue to manage the response to this severe weather event throughout the days ahead.
