Gardaí in Granard are appealing for witnesses who may have observed a serious accident on the Edgeworthstown to Castlepollard road on Saturday evening to contact them

Gardaí are hoping an extensive public appeal can unlock vital clues into the circumstances behind a single vehicle car accident outside Edgeworthstown at the weekend that left a man critically injured in hospital.

The 54-year-old man, who is local, remains in a serious condition after the grey Skoda Octavia he was driving, left the road at Ballaghgowla Frogan at around 6:30pm on Saturday evening.

Due to the fact no one else was in the car at the time, gardaí are pinning their hopes on potentially crucial information being provided from eye witnesses who may have come across the scene of the accident.

Investigators are still trying to establish what may have caused the accident given that road conditions on the R395, which is the main routeway from Edgeworthstown to Castlepollard, were not described as being overly hazardous at the time.

Anyone who may have been travelling along the road and either witnessed or come across the scene of the accident are being asked to contact Granard Garda Station at (043) 6686512.
