Longford Gardaí seized a number of weapons after stopping a car in Longford town at lunchtime today

A string of weapons have been seized by gardaí after a raid was carried out on a car in broad daylight in Longford town this afternoon.

Officers seized a number of offensive weapons including a machete, knives and a hatchet after a car was stopped in Longford town at around lunchtime.

A 19-year-old male was arrested at the scene and has since appeared at Mullingar District Court this afternoon in connection to the incident.

Gardaí, in the interim, have made a separate appeal for witnesses to contact them after a man sustained a number of stab wounds following an alleged assault in the Springlawn area of town last night.

A 19-year-old man is still being cared for by medics at St James' Hospital in Dublin.

He suffered a series of lacerations to his upper body and facial area during the alleged incident, prompting gardaí to launch an investigation.

A juvenile is currently being questioned by detectives at Longford Garda Station.

Gardaí say they want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen anything suspicious in the Springlawn/Ardnacassa area between 4:30pm and 5:30pm yesterday (Wednesday) evening to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
