UPDATE: Two men charged with attempted murder over Ballymahon stabbing incident

Two men have appeared in court in Newry charged with the attempted murder of a 44-year-old man in Ballymahon on Tuesday.

Eoin Stokes (37) and Thomas Stokes (30), both with addresses in the UK, were formally charged over the incident earlier today.

They have since been remanded in custody to Maghaberry Prison and are due to reappear before a court in Newry next Thursday (February 8). 

The pair were among a group of six men stopped by PSNI officers on the M1 on Tuesday afternoon following a request from gardaí.

Four other men have been released on police bail with strict conditions attached. 

They are to appear in court again on May 1. 

Forty-four-year-old Michael Stokes, who was seriously injured as a result of Tuesday morning's incident is continuing to be cared for at St James Hospital in Dublin.

His condition is still being described as serious.
