€1,000 in prizes up for grabs in Longford Duck Derby

€1,000 in prizes up for grabs in Longford Duck Derby

€1,000 worth of prizes are up for grabs thanks to the Attic House this Saturday, September 17 at the Mall, Longford.

Eleven young members of the Foróige Attic House Teen Project are undertaking an overseas leadership programme to Africa, and to help raise the necessary funds, they will be hosting a variety of fundraising intiatives, of which the ducky derby is one example.

“We're having a family fun day, it's very impromptu, very informal,” explained Foróige Regional Youth Officer, Jim Maher. Organised by the youths who are undertaking the trip, the event looks set to be a memorable one.

Kicking off at 2pm, there will be fun and activities aplenty for all ages and interests. Jim revealed that their own version of Pokémon Go will hopefully provide a fun scavenger hunt for kids- weather permitting - while teenagers and parents will also get the opportunity to learn more about the Attic.

The duck derby itself will see hundreds of rubber ducks race down the Camlin, with each duck corresponding to a ticket sold over the past few weeks. The duck that comes in first place will earn its owner €500, while second and third prize winners will go home with €300 and €200, respectively.

Ducks can still be purchased for €5 apiece in the run up to the event. Attic members will be selling them door-to-door, and locals are also invited to call into the Attic House on the Ballinalee Road. Ducks will also be on sale on the day of the derby, right up until the race.

Longfordians can also look forward to a 70s disco night at the Rugby Club as part of this fundraising drive, which will take place at a date yet to be confirmed in October.

Once funds are raised the group will travel to Cape Town and on to Gordon’s Bay for seven days and nights where they will engage with the Zola Township in South Africa and support the development of the education centre in the township.

This is a once in a life time opportunity for the young people of the Attic House and one that will remain with them throughout their lives.
