Longford Gardaí and two ambulance crews attend incident in Market Square

The incident, in which a man collapsed, occurred outside the Market Bar. Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 335 0570

Longford Gardaí and emergency services were called to an incident in Market Square, Longford town this afternoon (Thursday March 5)

The incident, which occurred outside The Market Bar, prompted a swift response from local Gardaí who were on the scene at 2.50pm. 

A man could be seen lying on the pavement where he was tended to by Gardaí as well as kind-hearted locals who provided blankets, a pillow, and at one point, an umbrella to shield the man from the rain while they awaited paramedics.

A defibrillator was also brought to the scene by a Garda as a precaution, though it is not believed to have been required.

As part of their enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s collapse, Gardaí spoke with local taxi drivers at the nearby rank.

Gardaí halting traffic to allow for ambulance access

At 3.10pm, the busy flow of traffic on Ballymahon Street was temporarily halted by two Gardaí to allow the Rapid Response jeep and two ambulances gain access to the scene.

Paramedics treated the man on site and once stabilised, he was transferred to the waiting ambulance.  

He was treated at the scene for a total of 20 minutes before being transferred to hospital. 

The man was then transported to the Midlands Regional Hospital.
