Great Water Street
Plans have begun to remove a section of footpath on the busy Great Water Street, situated just off Main Street.
The removal works will now allow for the road itself to be widened, and prevent drivers from having to mount the footpath whenever they meet another car on the road.
Plans to carry out the work comes following a motion submitted by Councillor Niall Gannon in which he asked that the council “commit to carrying out an urgent assessment with a view to widening the carriageway to allow the safe passage of two vehicles without the need for cars to mount the footpath.”

Responding to Cllr Gannon at a recent meeting of Longford Municipal District, the Senior Executive Engineer for Longford County Council, Peter Brady, told the chamber that the council were “currently reviewing options for the proposed widening of the road carriageway on Great Water Street” and that “as part of these works, it is intended to resurface the street later this year under the Road Programme, from the junction with Main Street to Camlin View.”
Since this meeting occurred, plans to press ahead with the work have been actioned.
While the council do not own the ground in question, it is known that they have "reached an agreement in relation to the path and it's all systems are go".
It is hoped the works will be carried out this summer.
