Longford planners give green light for new Ballymahon apartment complex development

Cllr Paul Ross submitted his support for the construction of apartments on Ballymahon's Main street

A proposed development to convert a derelict building on Main Street, Ballymahon, into 7 apartments has been granted planning permission this week by Longford County Council.

The request for planning permission, which was made by Mr Brendan Quaine, proposed a change of use of the existing two storey dwelling into an apartment block consisting of 5 one bedroom apartments, 2 two bedroom apartments, changes to relevant elevations, provision of parking, bike parking, bin storage, a private and public open space, and an upgrade of connections to public services.

The development also had the backing of Councillor Paul Ross who lodged a submission of support in which he cited the significant need for apartments in Ballymahon. Cllr Ross wrote that the building proposed for the development was previously unoccupied and that “this application will rejuvenate this centre of town building.” 

He added, “This application has 5 fully accessible ground floor units which would meet a housing need which we have in Ballymahon. 

This site is also fully serviced with water, waste water and electricity and if planning is successful, could be renovated in a quick time period.”

Cllr Ross also pointed out that the site aligned with the national Town Centre First policy which targets vacancy and dereliction, and promotes sustainable development and living.

There were no objections to the proposed development.
