Longford Lidl closure for refurbishment to have no impact on jobs

The closure of Lidl's Longford store will have no impact on those employed on site as workers have been offered employment in adjacent stores

The Longford Leader understands that the German retailer will provide transport to workers who need it to take up posts in their Mullingar warehouse or other supermarkets in the region.

Last Saturday (January 13) Lidl Longford closed their doors to facilitate the construction of a new state-of-the-art store.

Brian Smyth, Regional Property Director for Lidl Ireland said the move will enhance the offering the retailer provides to Longford shoppers: “When opened later this year, the expanded new store will offer customers a premier shopping experience in a modern new store built with sustainability at its core.”

In November of 2022 Lidl were granted planning permission to demolish the existing store and extend into a derelict site adjacent to the retail outlet. Lidl Ireland were granted permission to the proposed expansion by Longford County Council planners subject to 16 conditions.

The firm have operated the Dublin Road store for over two decades: “Lidl has been part of the Longford community for 23 years and we are delighted to bring this new store experience to shoppers whilst continuing to deliver our quality products at the lowest prices,” Mr Smyth said.

The Lidl Regional Property Director concluded by saying: We thank the local community for their patience whilst Lidl Longford is being refurbished and look forward to welcoming Longford shoppers to our neighbouring Lidl stores at Old Dublin Road, Patrick Street, Carrick on Shannon and Roscommon in the meantime.

“While Lidl Longford is being refurbished, the store team have been accommodated to work in Lidl stores close by.”
