Department of Integration issues statement in wake of Lanesboro fire

The former Convent building in Lanesboro

As the garda investigation continues into last night's fire at a Lanesboro property that will house Ukrainian refugee families, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has issued a statement.

A department spokesperson outlined, "The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth received an offer of accommodation for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) for the former Convent building, Main Street, Lanesboro, Co Longford.

"The property was offered to provide accommodation for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

"The property is currently undergoing refurbishment as part of the Emergency Refurbishment (Ukraine) Project overseen by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

"For any alleged incident at an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) accommodation centre, the centre is required to provide an incident report and the matter will be investigated by IPAS, as appropriate.

"Where An Garda Síochána are already involved, the Department is precluded from commenting as it may prejudice any consequent investigation or court case."

The former convent in Lanesboro is poised to accommodate 85 Ukrainian refugees from the second week in May.

And according to Lanesboro based Independent Cllr Mark Casey the deal is done.

“The deal has been done. It has been done at a national level with no consultation with local councillors but I did ask Longford County Council and the developer to have an open day at the convent and we have earmarked the 27th of this month from 2pm to 5pm.

"That will give concerned residents an opportunity to see the plans and talk to the Ukrainian Liaison Officer, talk to the manager of the facility who is a live-in manager, talk to the developer and talk to Longford County Council.”
