Fifteen people reported as homeless in Longford

A new report on the number of homeless people in the country has been labelled as "shocking" by a homelessness charity.
Focus Ireland made the comment on their X (formerly Twitter) last Friday (January 5), following the release of the report by the Department of Housing, which reveals a total of 13,500 people are accessing emergency accommodation across the State, with Roscommon, Leitrim and Longford among the counties with the fewest homeless people.

The new figures - which were recorded during the last week of November 2023 - mark record numbers nationwide, with 9,409 homeless adults and 4,105 homeless children.

According to the report, the number of homeless children rose by a massive 16% between November 2022 and November 2023, and an overall increase of 1,972 on the total number of people in emergency accommodation was also found in the same time period.

The vast majority of homeless people (6,790, or 72%) were found to be in Dublin, followed by 545 in Cork City and county, 361 in Limerick, 273 in Galway, 232 in Meath, and 180 in Louth.

Roscommon was found to be the county with the fewest homeless people (14), followed by Leitrim and Longford with just 15 homeless people each.
