The line up for Backstage Theatre Group's Spring production of 'The Snapper' has been announced.
The Longford town theatre group took to social media to give details of the cast.
The role of Sharon Rabbitte is portrayed by Niamh Hanley, while her father Jimmy Rabbitte will be played by Phil Cox.
Veronica Rabbitte is played by Christine O’Brien, George Burgess by Ger Rafferty, and Doris Burgess by Eileen Murphy.
Taking on the role of Yvonne Burgees is Sarah O’Keeffe, Jackie O’Keefe is played by Janice Gibney, and the part of Mary Curran will see Dee Monahan return to the stage. The Radiologist will be played by Michele Ciba, with Amy Oates as the Midwife.
Announcements on Darren Rabbitte, Linda Rabbitte and Tracy Rabbitte will be made later.
The play offers a warm, frank and wickedly funny account of family life and pregnancy in Northside Dublin in the 1980s.
The second novel in Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown Trilogy is a slice of time. It captures our urban capital as it's about to go through fundamental changes.
It's the story of one Sharon Rabbitte, a 20 year old living with her parents who becomes pregnant after an encounter with a man she’d rather forget. She refuses to tell anyone who the father is.
Sharon keeps the child and slowly starts to tell her family and friends. She quickly becomes the talk of the town and there is much discussion on who the identity of the father could be.
That is until one unlikely candidate starts to come to the fore. The play hurdles along with fun, pathos and a good deal of moral observation.
The Longford group once again enlisted the talent of Carrigallen's Charles McGuinness to guide the 2024 production.
McGuinness directed last year's Sive, and was the writer of the winning one act play in the DLI/ADCI Playwriting Award 2023 with 'Clarity at Last'.
On social media the local theatre group wrote: “What a line up folks , make sure to like and share this is sure to be an absolute cracker of a show.”
They advise potential audience members: “Tickets are on sale and Saturday is starting to fill fast. Book your tickets before they are all snappered up!”
