Longford County Council: Concerns over Inny maintenance programme

Red Bridge on the River Inny

The difficulty recreational users of the River Inny experience because of overgrown vegetation were raised by a local councillor when representatives of Waterways Ireland attended a recent County Council meeting.


Cllr Mick Cahill asked for an update on the maintenance programme for the river, expressing the concern about the condition of the river bank: “What are the plans to remove some of the overgrowth. It's of concern to river users, for example kayakers and fishermen.”


Brian Treacy, Waterways Ireland's North Shannon Senior Engineer, replied: “We have a long stretch of maintenance to carry out along the river navigation with limited resources. Our navigation goes as far as the Red Bridge on the River Inny. Beyond that is out of our remit.”
