The late Elizabeth and Vincent Tierney
A final link with the great Mullinalaghta team of the 1940s and 50s was severed on Thursday last, August 31 with the passing of the late Vincent Tierney, Kettering, Northamptonshire, and formerly of Granard, at the age of 93.
Vincent was a noted player for the Longford County team in the early 1950s before he emigrated to England and he was a member of the Mullinalaghta team of 1952 which narrowly lost the Senior final after a replay.
He and his late wife Elizabeth, formerly Campbell from Killoe, were frequent visitors to Longford down the years and he maintained an interest in the fortunes of the club especially in its recent period of success.
Vincent and Elizabeth celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on November 6, 2022.
His death came a couple of weeks after that of Elizabeth (Elizabeth, aged 97, passed to her eternal reward on August 14) and they are survived by their sons Vincent, Val and Laur, daughters Helen and Elaine, sons and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Elizabeth's brother John Campbell and his wife Kathleen, Vincent's sister-in-law Mary Tierney (Buttlersbridge), nephews, nieces and a large circle of friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathies.
A joint Funeral Mass will take place in Kettering on Thursday with burial to take place in Granardkille Cemetery at a later date.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
Vincent's nephew Mervyn posted a lovely tribute on Facebook:
"Farewell to a great Uncle, Vincent Tierney, just 17 days after his beloved wife Elizabeth.
"A so proud Granard and Longford man, proud St Mary's GAA Granard man, a proud St Mel's College man, a proud Railway Cup medalist on two occasions with Leinster, a proud husband, father, grandfather, & greatgrandfather.
"A very successful businessman who made a wonderful life for himself and family in the UK.
"A great support to me and Brenda since the passing of Dad, his brother in August 2020 and Mam Jan 2022.
"His support, guidance and words of wisdom were appreciated and will never be forgotten. I'll miss those frequent calls but very thankful and appreciative for the ones I received.
"May he now rest in eternal peace with his wife, Elizabeth, Dad Joe, Mum Ellen (Nellie), brothers Paddy and Fintan, step brothers, extended family and many friends."
