In support of Ireland’s transition to a clean electric future, ESB Networks is continuing to roll out the National Smart Metering Programme by replacing existing electricity meters in homes, farms and businesses across the country with next generation smart meters.
This upgrade is a like-for-like exchange of the meter. Following the installation of a smart meter, there is no change to a customer’s electricity price plan with their supplier.
Smart meters will help transform how electricity consumption is measured and managed. They provide customers with access to greater information about how they use their electricity. This can help households to make more informed choices about how and when to use electricity. Customers can also refer to this information when discussing price plans with their supplier.
To view usage information, a smart meter customer just needs to set up an ESB Networks Online Account. Registration is a straightforward process at esbnetworks.ie.
ESB Networks’ deployment of smart meters began in autumn 2019, and the rollout is being carried out on an area-by-area basis. Customers in each area are notified in advance of the rollout, and over 1.3 million smart meters have already been installed in Ireland, including approximately 26% of eligible households in county Longford.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and electricity suppliers.
