At the end of August runners from far and wide will travel to Longford to participate in the Abbott Longford Marathon.
Among their numbers will be 19 year old Sophie Bayliss from Killoe. Sophie will undertake the half marathon course and will trek the 21 kilometres distance for a very worthy cause.
In training since May, this will be her first effort at the half Marathon distance: “I was part of Longford athletics club, so I have been running for quite a while, but this is my first time to do the half marathon distance,” she said.
Sophie is a student in the Atlantic Technological University Sligo. Up to her decision to run the half marathon her fitness regime concentrated on gym work and dancing.
The beneficiary of her will be the LauraLynn Children's Hospice: “On the 27th of August 2023. I decided I wanted to run this marathon for a reason.
“I am fundraising for LauraLynn Children's Hospice Ireland. LauraLynn is an amazing charity providing palliative care to children with life-limiting conditions and support for families all across Ireland. The fact that they are Irish is a significant factor in choosing them.”
The young woman's efforts are going well: “I have set a target goal of €400. So far I have online donations of €245 and a sponsorship card which has €70. Anyone who wants to donate can do so on idonate.ie/sophiebayliss or search on Facebook.”
