Plans to carry out a multi million euro regeneration of Longford town must remain Longford County Council's top priority, a meeting was told last week
Local authority bosses are facing renewed calls to revitalise Longford's regeneration drive amid fears senior chiefs had taken their “foot off the gas” in delivering the multi-million euro plan.
Those suggestions came at the behest of Independent Cllr Gerry Warnock after the Longford town based politician questioned why a monthly management report contained no reference to the project.
Cllr Warnock, in pointing the finger squarely at the county town's so-called 'Northern Quarter', said that particular section of the town had been blighted by “dereliction, squalor and inappropriate development” for far too long.
“It needs a lot of help,” he said. “The traders and people that use that end of the town want to see this project kick on.”
Cllr Warnock said his comments, while not aimed solely at the council's top table, they were being made nonetheless to focus attention on a development which was vital in re-energising Longford town for years to come.
“It has to be the top priority of this local authority,” he stressed.
