A Longford man who allegedly repeatedly punched and kicked another man in a violent row is undergoing anger management counselling, a court was told last week.

Keith Kelly, 3 Granada Drive, Granard, Longford, appeared at last week's sitting of Longford District Court charged with assault at Trumra Road, Granard, Co Longford on July 31, 2022.

Outlining the State's case, Sgt Mark Mahon said the alleged victim called to Granard garda station at around 7:30pm to claim he had been assaulted by Mr Kelly sometime beforehand.

Sgt Mahon said the man told of how he had been allegedly “repeatedly punched in the head and torso” by Mr Kelly, who he cited as a friend of his.

The court was informed the alleged incident continued moments later with Mr Kelly allegedly meting out more kicks and punches to his victim.

Sgt Mahon said the alleged victim in the case sustained a soft tissue injury as a result.

In defence, solicitor Frank Gearty said a probation report might be an advisable course of action under the circumstances.
Mr Gearty also said Mr Kelly is in the throes of attending anger management counselling.

Judge John Brennan agreed with Mr Gearty and said such a move was the most suitable stance to adopt.

“A probation report is appropriate given the nature of the alleged offence,” he said.

Judge Brennan adjourned the case to a sitting of Longford District Court on September 19 when, it is anticipated a probation report will be completed.

The State, in the meantime, are also expected to canvass for a victim impact statement.
