Census 2022: The number of people over the age of 65 in Longford is continuing to rise

Longford's population is getting older with the number of people over the age of 65 increasing by 26 per cent, new census data has found.

There are now over 7,300 pensioners residing in the county in what is being viewed as a marked rise since the last census in 2016.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) released the latest finds of Census 2022, which found average age of Longford’s population in April 2022 was 38.8 years, compared with 37.4 years in April 2016. Nationally, the average age of the population was 38.8, up from 37.4 in April 2016.

The number of dual Irish citizens increased from 752 to 1,523 while non-Irish citizens accounted for 13% of the county’s population.

Nationally, dual Irish citizenship increased by 63% from 104,784 to 170,597 people and non-Irish citizens made up 12% of the population.

Approximately 4,110 people (aged 15 and over) worked from home at least one day a week in 2022. This represented 21% of the workforce compared to the national figure of 32%.

Home ownership and the numbers of people renting in Longford showed moderate differences to the broader national picture.
In 2022, in Longford 61% of households owned their own home, with a further 31% renting. This compared with 66% of households owning their home nationally and 28% renting.

Cormac Halpin, Senior Statistician in the Census Division, said: “The publication of Census 2022 results could not have been achieved without the overwhelmingly positive response from the public and we thank everyone who completed their census form on 03 April 2022.

“We would also like to thank everyone involved in the Census 2022 campaign culminating in today’s successful publication of the results.”
